((Fate of Two, PT 2/2)) {Special thanks to Combinedfleet.com for photos / photos are of Type 1C merchants} As WWII began to pick up pace and US submarines were sinking thousands of tons of Japanese shipping, the Shozan Maru was completed in February of 1944. She was a Standard Merchant Type 1C, weighing in at 2,700 tons, was 320 ft in length and could make 14 knots; fairly good considering they were run on coal and reciprocating engines. Immediately after commissioning, Shozan Maru was ushered into service for the Imperial Army. Her first sight of enemy action came on May 22nd when her escort, destroyer Asanagi, was torpedoed and sunk by a submarine. She continued to make transport runs and would eventually leave once more from Takao in convoy TAMA-21C, headed for Manila. After Seattle Maru was torpedoed and sunk on the 16th by a submarine, Shozan Maru picks up survivors alongside Hiyama Maru. Two US subs closed in that night in a joint attack and ravage the convoy. Shozan Maru managed to avoid the carnage, but her luck ran out at 3:45 AM on July 17th. USS Thresher (SS-200) sets her sights on Shozan Maru and fires a spread of torpedoes. One, possibly two, explode alongside the merchant which was filled to the brim with her own troops and survivors from Seattle Maru. Luckily, like Seattle Maru, she sank very slowly and allowed most to jump overboard before the ship went under. Unfortunately, many hundreds would still drown; 713 lives were lost overall, including almost 500 from Seattle Maru. #merchantmarine #merchantnavy #wwii #ww2 #worldwartwo #worldwarii #worldwar2 #freighter #japanese #ship #maritime #history #photo #combinedfleet #tragedy #1944 #2018 #submarine #usn #seattle #lestweforget #shozanmaru #seattlemaru

I was blown away by the film documentary Spitfire. It was superb and simply stunning. The film captured the very raw essence and spine tingling emotion that is generated whenever one hears that roar of the Spitfire’s Merlin engine. Well done to all involved. A Day in the History- 18th July 1942 A transport from Slovakia arrived to Auschwitz. After the selection 327 men were registered as prisoners with numbers 48494-48820. 178 women were given numbers 9160-9337. The rest of the transport was killed in the gas chambers. In the picture you can see a painting by David Olère, former Auschwitz prisoner and the member of the Sonderkommando (the work unit forced to work in the crematoria and the gas chambers). It's entitled 'In the Undressing Room of Crematorium' and you can see women and children undressing themselves and entering the gas chamber. The painting was made in 1946. “Niitaka yama nobore 1208” - “Climb Mount Niitaka 1208”. This was the message that the Japanese Navy’s Pearl Harbor attack force under Vice Admiral Nagumo Chuichi received on December 2, 1941 en route to the Hawaiian islands. It was code meaning the planned raid on the US Navy’s main Pacific base was to go ahead on December 8 Tokyo time - December 7 in Pearl Harbor. At 3,952 meters, Niitaka was the highest peak in the Japanese empire, located in the colony of Taiwan. To the Chinese it is known as Yushan or Jade Mountain. A representation of this amazing natural feature can be seen today at the CKS International Airport near Taipei, completed by noted artist Li Zong-Ren. #china #taiwan #japan #ww2 #worldwar2 #worldwarii #worldwartwo #pearlharbor #pacificwar #art #mountains #yushan #airport #cksinternationalairport

January 27, 1945 - escorting prisoners from the Auschwitz concentration camp. On that day, the Red Army liberated over 7,000 the extremely exhausted prisoners of the German Auschwitz extermination camp. In the camp, the Germans killed at least 1.1 million people, mainly Jews, as well as Poles, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war and representatives of other nations. On January 17, 1945, in KL Auschwitz, the last general appeal took place, to which 67 012 women prisoners and prisoners stood. In mid-January 1945, the Nazis began the final evacuation and liquidation of the Auschwitz concentration camp. "Death marches" have begun. In total, 58 thousand were brought out from KL Auschwitz and sub-camps. people. Prisoners were transported to camps in the depths of the Reich by open wagons. There were over 7,000 in the camp. prisoners, including about 500 children. The SS staff considered them unsuitable for pedestrian evacuation. They were to be killed. The Nazis managed to kill about 700 of them, including about 200 of them alive in barracks in the sub-camp near the Fuersten mine in Wesoła near Mysłowice. The Germans also began to destroy the camp buildings - they blew up the crematoria, set fire to magazines with property plundered by the victims. On 26 January, most SS men left the camp. Some of the former prisoners left their homes shortly after the liberation. The others were placed in hospitals. Over 4,500 hospitals went to hospitals. former prisoners from over 20 countries. Patients also found hospitality in private homes. For weeks after the liberation, the nurses found bread under the mattresses, hidden by the sick the next day in disbelief that they would receive new portions on the next day. Some of the former prisoners escaped before being sent to a bath. They are afraid that gas will appear in showers instead of water. Others defended against intravenous or intramuscular administration of drugs. It reminded them of deadly injections from phenol. Meals were given to them almost as medicines so that they would not die of overeating. I also invite you to @_history_pl

On July 18, 1944, commanded by Gen. Władysław Anders, the 2nd Polish Corps liberated the port city of Ancona (Italy) on the Adriatic Sea. The plan of attack on Ancona was developed by General Anders' staff, to whom British units and the Italian Liberation Corps were subordinated. After 1939, it was the only independent Polish operation on the western front. Entrusting the mission of Ankona's liberation to the Poles was an expression of trust given to them after the victory at Monte Cassino. The plan assumed a flanking maneuver. The Polish attack began on July 17. The 5th Kresowa Infantry Division won the hills of Monte della Crescia, and the 2nd Armored Brigade - Monte Torto. The next day, these units reached the sea at the mouth of the Esino River north of Ancona, cutting it off from the rest of the area occupied by the Germans. At the same time, the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division dominated the city and port. On July 18, at 14:30, the Carpathian lancers and the 2nd Carpathian Rifle Battalion entered Ancona. The German 278 Infantry Division was destroyed. Acquiring the port of Ancona was a very important military success of the Poles. It has facilitated the Allied forces to accelerate the offensive towards Germany. Losses of the 2nd Corps during the battles for Ancona amounted to 388 dead, 1636 wounded; 126 were considered missing. Polish soldiers killed and died as a result of wounds were buried in the cemetery in Loreto. It was there that the battle preceding the fights for Ancona took place. During the bombings, the basilica dome was lit. The fire was extinguished by soldiers of the 3rd Carpathian Infantry Division and received papal decorations for it. I was in Florence South Carolina today and took a stroll through Florence National Cemetery. It was here I discovered a sad story of a family’s sacrifice during the Second World War. These are the Graves of PFC Alvin (Left) & PFC Robert (Right) Norvell. Alvin was born on January 29th 1923 in Aberdeen South Dakota he grew up in Parkton North Carolina where he attended the local schools, and worked as a clerk for Mr. Mitchell Epstein. He registered for the draft on June 39th 1942 and was drafted shortly thereafter, Alvin was sent to Camp Haan California before being sent to England as part of the 547th AAA AW BN Mbl. On October 5th 1944 the 547th was attached to the 95th Infantry Division. Private First Class Alvin Norvell was with the 547th as they moved in on Fortress Metz, it was in this action that PFC Norvell met his fate on October 21st 1944. General Patton commended the 547th and the 95th Infantry Division saying they “greatly contributed to the destruction of an entire reinforced German division. Against these fortifications which had never before in modern times fallen by assault, in terrain favorable to the enemy, and under almost intolerable weather conditions of rain, flood, and bitter cold, your officers and men met a most searching combat test which required not only individual courage, skill, endurance, and determination, but also sound tactical judgment coupled with an insatiable desire to close with the enemy. This achievement has added luster to the glorious history of American arms, for which you and all the officers and enlisted personnel of your division and attached units, are highly commended.” PFC Norvell was originally interred in Andilly France before being interred at Florence National Cemetery.
